The actual mechanism
The tingling has a well-understood, entirely separate cause from anything neurological or dangerous: beta-alanine binds to and activates a specific class of receptors (MRGPRD receptors) on sensory nerve endings in the skin, triggering a temporary, localized tingling sensation. It typically peaks within the first hour and fades within 60–90 minutes, and it carries no long-term health consequences — it's a purely sensory effect, unrelated to any real tissue irritation, allergic reaction, or nerve damage.
Why beta-alanine works for endurance despite the odd side effect
Beta-alanine's actual training benefit is separate from the tingling entirely: it's a precursor to carnosine, a compound stored in muscle tissue that helps buffer the drop in pH — acid buildup — that occurs during sustained high-intensity effort, roughly 1 to 4 minutes of near-maximal work, like a hard set of 15–25 reps or a 400–800 meter run. Higher muscle carnosine levels, built up over weeks of consistent beta-alanine supplementation, are linked to modestly improved performance in exactly that kind of effort, largely independent of whether a given dose happens to cause tingling.
