Why protein 'burns' calories just by being digested
Your body spends part of any food's own calorie value just digesting, absorbing, and processing it — a cost known as the thermic effect of food (TEF), sometimes called diet-induced thermogenesis. The size of that cost varies a lot by macronutrient: roughly 5–10% of calories for carbohydrates, just 0–3% for dietary fat, and substantially more for protein — typically 20–30%.
Why protein costs so much more to process
Breaking protein down into individual amino acids, then using those amino acids for further metabolic work, requires noticeably more enzymatic activity than breaking down carbohydrates or fat. Protein metabolism also involves extra steps that carbs and fat mostly skip — deaminating amino acids (removing the nitrogen group) and processing that nitrogen through the urea cycle for excretion, both of which cost real energy. That extra biochemical overhead is essentially the entire explanation for protein's outsized thermic effect.
What this looks like in real numbers
Out of 100 calories eaten as pure protein, the body effectively nets only about 70–80 usable calories after accounting for the cost of digesting and processing it — compared to roughly 90–95 usable calories out of 100 from carbs, and 97–100 out of 100 from fat. Applied across a full day's meals, this means a diet's actual macronutrient breakdown, not just its total calorie count, has a small but measurable effect on net energy balance.
Why the effect is real but shouldn't be overstated
The gap is genuine and reproducible in research, but it's not large enough to be a weight-loss strategy on its own — shifting 200 calories a day from carbs to protein might net an extra 20–30 calories burned through digestion alone, which is a rounding error next to the calorie impact of exercise or overall intake. It's a real, contributing factor, not a hack that makes calories "not count."
Practical takeaway
The thermic effect is one of several small reasons a higher-protein diet at equal total calories tends to slightly outperform a lower-protein one for fat loss — on top of protein's much larger, better-established benefits: preserving muscle mass in a calorie deficit and providing meaningfully better satiety per calorie than carbs or fat.
