Aerobic and anaerobic threshold: why a casual gym-goer should care
The aerobic threshold is the exercise intensity at which the body can still fully fuel working muscles using oxygen, without meaningfully building up lactic acid in the blood. The anaerobic threshold — sometimes called the lactate threshold — is a higher intensity where the body can no longer clear lactate from the blood as fast as it's being produced, and blood lactate concentration starts rising sharply, which is what ultimately limits how long that intensity can be sustained.
What's actually happening physiologically
Below the aerobic threshold, muscles rely almost entirely on aerobic metabolism — burning fat and some carbohydrate with oxygen as the primary fuel pathway, a process that's slower to produce energy but can be sustained for very long periods. As intensity climbs past the aerobic threshold, the body increasingly supplements with anaerobic glycolysis, which produces energy faster but generates lactate as a byproduct. Up to the anaerobic threshold, the body can still clear that lactate about as fast as it accumulates. Past it, production outpaces clearance, lactate builds up, and the accompanying drop in muscle pH is a major reason that intensity feels unsustainable within minutes rather than hours.
The zone most casual exercisers accidentally live in
Between these two thresholds sits a zone often called "moderate-hard," or less charitably the "gray zone," where a large share of casual exercisers spend most of their cardio time, often without realizing it. It's intense enough to feel like a solid workout — breathing hard, unable to hold a full conversation — but it isn't structured deliberately enough to maximally develop any one specific quality. It's simultaneously too hard to build base aerobic endurance with minimal fatigue cost, and not hard or short enough to build real anaerobic capacity and speed.
What training below vs. at or above threshold actually builds
Training below the aerobic threshold — an easy pace where holding a conversation is still comfortable — efficiently builds base aerobic endurance, mitochondrial density, and fat-burning capacity, all at a very low recovery cost, which is why it can be done frequently and in high volume. Training at or above the anaerobic threshold — intervals, tempo efforts, hard conditioning work — builds the body's ability to sustain high intensity for longer and raises the threshold itself over time, but it demands significantly more recovery and can't be done nearly as often without risking overtraining.

The practical point for a casual gym-goer isn't precisely pinpointing your own thresholds in a lab with blood lactate testing — it's understanding that not every cardio session is equally useful for the same goal. If the aim is general endurance, heart health, and consistent fat loss, it's more effective to spend most weekly cardio time comfortably below threshold, and reserve harder, threshold-or-above efforts for one or two sessions a week rather than defaulting to moderate-hard intensity every single time.
